Song of Survival
Spring 2022
In the early 20th Century, the Dutch East Indies, now modern-day Indonesia, had become home to hundreds of thousands of Dutch, Australian, and British settlers. As the Second World War broke out and the Japanese began to occupy this region, European and Australian civilians were rounded up and placed in internment camps. Over 60,000 of them were women and children, confined in more than 18 camps, who experienced horrifying conditions that worsened as the war years rolled on. In one such camp, two women, found creative ways to keep hope alive and inspire solidarity among the interned. Margaret Dryburgh, a Presbyterian missionary, had received a BA in education and music. She was an organist and earnest teacher. After being imprisoned for a year-and-a-half, she began to write down the notation for piano and orchestral scores. Then she, with the help of Norah Chambers, who had studied violin, voice, and piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London, condensed the scores and rearranged them for unaccompanied voices without losing the aspects of the original instrumentation – all this was accomplished from memory, written on scraps of paper, without access to a published score or musical instrument. The UWF Concert Choir researched and realized a few of these songs in our April 21, 2022 concert: Song of Survival.

Due to the 2020 pandemic, the UWF Singers moved all rehearsals to an outdoor location for the fall semester. The Singers wore masks at all times and observed proper distancing measures. They have demonstrated a heightened awareness for the health and wellbeing of each member of the group. While not without its challenges, this weekly outdoor rehearsal setting has proven to be quite special and I couldn't be prouder of what we have been able to accomplish. Check out some of our videos here. - Peter Steenblik
